BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a revolutionary martial art, an evolved form of traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu or Judo. BJJ is a self-defense system developed by Carlos Gracie Sr. and Helio Gracie in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in the early-mid 1900s. BJJ teaches a system of techniques that can be performed by anyone, regardless of size, speed, or strength. It focuses on creating the maximum amount of leverge and utilizes choke holds, joint locks, throws, and proper positioning in order to control an attacker. This system is perfect for women and children, as it is inherently nonviolent, and requires minimal power, strength, and speed. It has been tested and proven over and over again in real-life situations and No-Holds Barred (NHB) events such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

The average person can learn and internalize most of the basic techniques employed in a self-defense situation in a matter of a few months. The key to developing these reflexes and through the internalization of the techniques is by live "rolling" or sparring. The way we teach students to spar is extremely safe and efficient, but still creates the sensibility for an attacker's weight, aggression, body type, and form of movement in order to create muscle memory and reflexes that are geared toward escaping bad positions and securing dominate, safe positions.
